Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I join a union?
When you are part of a union, you gain a stronger voice in the workplace. What's more, union jobs generally pay higher wages than non-union. Anti-labor propaganda suggests that additional pay is eaten up by union dues. That's a lie. You gain far more in wages and benefits by being a union member.
What about benefits?
Pensions, medical insurance, and overtime premiums are part of the benefits of working as a union member. In fact, they often don't exist without a union contract. You also gain access to training programs that make career advancement possible.
How do I become a union member?
There are many ways to become a union member and there are many advantages as well. If you've never worked in the finishing trades, you would begin with an apprenticeship with training at the Finishing Trades Institute of the Upper Midwest. You'll earn-while-you-learn and build your skill set through a combination of classroom and hands-on training at job sites. If you are currently working in the trades, but don't have the advantage of being a union member, contact the Organizing Department and talk to an organizer about joining.

I'm a contractor and want the advantages of hiring union workers. How do I become a union contractor?
As a union contractor you'll have access to a skilled labor pool, a flexible work force, and your employees in the field will have access to our training. These three advantages combined with our recruitment and project support will give you the advantage you need to stay ahead in our industries. Statistics show that a union trained workforce work safer, work smarter, and ultimately will save you money where you need it most. We consider the contractors that hire our members partners in the industry. Ultimately, if you're not successful, neither are our members. If you have questions about becoming a union contractor or how being a union contractor will benefit your business, please contact our organizing department.
I'm a member. How can I help the union grow?
We are always looking for volunteers. There are many ways you can help your union grow and become stronger. Please contact the Director of Organizing for opportunities.
